Agatha Raisin is first introduced in the one off Afternoon Play "Quiche of Death"  https://archive.org/details/quicheofdeath , in which recently retired PR executive Agatha discovers that the Cotswold village to which she has moved is a hotbed of murder. In these three series, Agatha is joined by her long suffering neighbour and local heart-throb James Lacey. Agatha makes increasingly desperate attempts to woo James while fending off James admirers, while the body count climbs to...

I think Auntie's own description sums this book up nicely: 100,000 years ago, at least six human species inhabited the earth. Today there is just one. Far-reaching and provocative, Sapiens challenges everything we thought we knew about being human, ending with a look at what lies ahead for humankind.

Five series totalling 28 episodes. Paolo Baldi is a Roman Catholic priest. Despite his name, he works in Ireland - his parents moved to Ireland before he was born. He is going through a crisis of faith and has obtained permission to take a sabbatical, in which time he takes up a post as a lecturer in moral philosophy at an un-named Dublin University. Geoffrey Household's classic thriller, read by Michael Jayston. An un-named man stalks an un-named European leader (clearly Hitler at Berchtesdaden) in the months leading up to WW2. He is caught, tortured and left for dead, but escapes back to England. His adversaries discover that he is still alive and pursue him, forcing him to take to ground. How will he regain his freedom?

Horace Rumpole was the wonderful creation of Barrister and author John Mortimer and was, I suspect, to some extent based upon Mortimer himself. Rumpole never prosecutes - only defends - and resists all pressure from "she who must be obeyed" i.e. his wife Hilda, to become a QC or "Queer Customer" as Rumpole has it. Although not the best performance of Rumpole - a part played for years on TV by Leo McKern - these 13 episodes provide a great introduction to Rumpole, played here...

3 Series of different numbers of episodes Even by the standard of the early 1980s, this series is more "Dixon of Dock Green" than "The Sweeney", albeit that the writer attempts to make his central character sound hard edged and tough. View it as more an entertaining period piece and you will not feel let down.

Yes Minister was a TV series running on the BBC between 1980 and 1988, set in the fictional "Department of Administrative Affairs" and nominally run by the Minister Jim Hacker. In reality, of course, it and the Minister were run by the senior civil servants in the Department, namely the Permanent Secretary Sir Humphrey Appleby. Sir Humphrey of course had his own agenda and Hacker was forever trying to find ways of fighting a way through Sir Humphrey's ever "helpful"...

Sadly, it appears that BBC Radio Drama have become bored with Rumpole. First, they have given the role to Julian Rhind-Tutt, who is excellentt in many roles, but for me is definitely not the sometimes grumpy and always non-compliant Rumpole; secondly, in these three dramatisations they have decided to create a "will they / won't they"romance between Rumpole and Phyllida Erskine-Brown (nee Trant). Hercule Poirot is on a 'plane from Paris to Croydon and, who'd have thought it, somebody gets murdered. The usual red herrings litter his path, but he gets his man - or woman.

Torchwood started life as a BBC TV spin off from the Doctor Who franchise and concerned the exploits of the Cardiff based "Torchwood Institute", led by the immortal Captain Jack Harkness. Their mission was to seek out and destroy alien threats tpo the Earth and ran on TV for 4  series. Unusually, the series then transferred to radio, with these 7, stand alone stories. If you can take your sci-fi without visual effects and instead use your imagination, these are for you. For the...

Charles, bit part actor and amateur sleuth, returns to the stage as the Ghost in Hamlet, but rehearsals are fraught as both Ophelia and Hamlet are being played by reality TV stars and soon it's not only Shakespeare's lines that are being murdered. As the body count rises so do Charles suspicions.  Whilst at home Frances fears she may have come to the end of allowing her semi-detached husband to remain as her lodger.

I've not read the book, so I'm not sure that compressing it to a 90 minute play, enjoyable as it is, does the book justice. I've added the book to my "must read" pile. In the future, man lives underground. Society is guided by the beneficent "Spacers", the descendants of humans who explored the galaxy and now inhabit around 50 planets. They make widespread use of robots - subject to the now famous rules of robotics. The story itself is a sci fi, crime drama, an unusual...

Five part dramatisation of Agatha Christie's final(?) Miss Marple novel. The story is unusual for Christie, in that it is a sequel to her previous novel A Caribbean Mystery: https://archive.org/details/CaribbeanMystery.  June Whitfield plays Miss Marple in both productions.

A notice appears in the paper of a small English village, Chipping Cleghorn: "A murder is announced and will take place on Friday, October 29th, at Little Paddocks, at 6:30 p.m. Friends accept this, the only intimation." This comes as a surprise to Letitia Blacklock, owner of Little Paddocks, as she has no idea what the notice means; she didn't place it, and none of her companions knows more than she. At 6.30, a masked man bursts into Little Paddocks, the lights go out and a shot is...

Dixon of Dock Green was a British police series on the BBC from 1955 to 1976, the central character being neighbourhood bobby PC (later Sergeant) George Dixon, a character who first appeared in the 1949 film "The Blue Lamp". Dixon was played in every episode by Jack Warner, meaning that by the time the TV series ended, George Dixon was 81 years old - and still in uniform. These 12 episodes have been adapted from Ted Willis original scripts. They reflect a style of policing that we all...

John Creasey was a one man novel factory, writing (according to Wikipedia) over 600 novels under 28 different names.  Upper class detective Richard Rollison    (aka ‘The Toff’)  featured in over 40 novels, though the BBC have only dramatised 2 of these. 6 part dramatisation of the Alastair MacLean novel. Navarone is an imaginary Greek island, upon which the Nazis have built a huge gun emplacement. Hundreds of British soldiers are stranded on a nearby island and the guns must be put out of action before they can be rescued. The guns though cannot be attacked from sea or air - only from the island of Navarone itself...... The story was inspired by a 1944 attack on a gun emplacement on the Italian island of Elba.

01 - A Different Path McLevy is in for an unwelcome upset to his work life in this returning series. The Chief Constable of McLevy’s Leith division has been replaced, and the new broom wants sweeping changes implemented — immediately. The incoming boss, Craddock, is full of religious fervour and does not so much instruct as preach to McLevy and his men. Worst of all, there are no shades of grey in Craddock’s world: people are either good or bad, which doesn’t bode well for McLevy’s...

Modesty Blaise started off as a 1960s strip cartoon, though was later developed into novels and three films. Modesty Blaise is a wealthy, very curvaceous young woman of a mysterious background who, although at times a criminal, also works sometimes for the British Secret Service under instructions from Sir Gerald Tarrant. In this story, the subject of the first novel, a  British agent is found dead in suspicious circumstances. Now rumours are circulating of a plot to steal a huge consignment...
